Tell Craiglist to stop blocking craigsfindr.com

Almost 500!

October 13, 2008, Author: Aric

There are nearly 500 clones in the wild as of today.

The only issue reported is that fact that the installation is expecting to be run from the site ‘root’ directory. So http://yoursite.com/craigsfindr won’t work. The quickest solution has been to setup a sub-domain (craigsfindr.yoursite.com) and point it at the installation directory.

Otherwise, most emails I get are people asking a way to find the clones. No quick fix for this however. Since posting a listing would simply make it too easy for Craigslist.org IT to hunt them down. You can find a few with some persistent Googling, otherwise I’d suggest setting one up for your own.

Spread the word, etc etc. If you have any problems, questions or whatever, you can email me at feedback [at] craigsfindr.com.

300

There are approximately 300 clones running or coming online. How do you find them? Beats me. Wait for Google to cache things I suppose.

Other news: A couple folks in the community are working on a desktop installable version. So you can run craigsfindr from your desktop, without a webserver and all that. Which is AWESOME, and I seriously appreciate the effort/initiative.

I will post a url/download link once it’s ready.

Send in the clones

August 19, 2008, Author: Aric

I’m please to report that there are approximately 200 craigsfindr clones out in the wild now.

The bad news is that I will not be posting links to these sites, since Craig & Co would just shut them down. Which means, you’re going to have to ask around to find one. Otherwise, ask a friend to set it up on your site, or setup a site of your own.

Good luck!

A clone, while you wait

Want to have your very own craigsfindr search engine, but don’t feel you can tackle the install yourself, then email me at feedback at craigsfindr.com.

I’ll be happy to install it free of charge.

I don’t have the time to play XBox as much as I’d like, let alone keep fighting with the Craigslist IT department. I realized that I would have to continually re-engineer my app in order to keep the site running. Life’s too short for that.

And we’re down again

August 15, 2008, Author: Aric

Craigslist.org has been blocking enough of the proxy addresses that about 25% of searches were coming up empty. I don’t have time to address the issue.

So, I’ve taken the site back down.

Sorry.

Craig Recommends Google!!

This is the lastest reply from Craig Newmark….

His followup to my previous email:

Aric, our software does automatic blocking when it detects a client
demanding too much.

maybe use google with site:craigslist.org ?

Craig

My reply:

Craig,

Are you kidding me?

Did you even read my email? It has a number of questions which you missed.
How come the software doesn't block the googlebot?

-Aric

Google?! Really?

Apparently only big corporations get access and can spider and cache listing, and make money off of craigslist content. But I’m worse than Hitler for just enabling people to search more than one server, ad free?

Hypocrisy?

Back in Action

August 11, 2008, Author: Aric

Craigsfindr.com is (at the moment) back in action. Search performance may vary.

And no, craigslist has not come to it’s senses. I’m masking the traffic in numerous ways to keep thier blocking software guessing.

Happy Searching!

I am making some changes to the engine to bring everything back online.  Site should be back online in a day or so.
